The Rebel I obtained from an elderly chap, and had been stored in a lock up for 4 years. As you can imagine, it was in a bit of a state. After having the engine and gearbox rebuilt, I put in a complete new braking system, including slave, master and handbrake. A new exhaust system, new manifold, rewire, new vinyl roof and tonnau cover. New carpets, re-chromed bumpers and after 25 hours of welding and cutting out rust, it was rubbed down for a bare metal re-spray. The result is now what you see, with a lot of help from TEC members. It was made in Kenoshia Shore Plant, on the US highway 41, Lake Michigan in May 1968. The production run was 823. About 150 were termed rogue ie right hand drive, and approximately 20 of these were made convertible. This model is a Rambler SST Rebel with a 290 cu typhoon engine giving 210 bhp at 4,600 rpm. It also has a power hood and twin pot calipers. The car was sold new in the UK imported by AMC concessionaires near the Chiswick flyover. It has had 5 owners, but I have no history. |
